FINKELSTEIN – The anniversary magazine marking the 100th birthday
To mark the 100th birthday of Berthold Finkelstein, a magazine entitled ‘FINKELSTEIN. A magazine about democracy, courage and political education’ is being published.
Invitation to the event
The Gustav Stresemann Institute cordially invites you to the anniversary event ‘100 Years of Berthold Finkelstein: A European Life in the 20th Century,’ which will take place on Thursday, 11 December 2025, at 4 p.m. in Bonn. The event takes an analytical look at educational work in post-war Germany, sheds light on the motivations and circumstances, and asks what the work of the founding generation of political education gives us as a mission today. Together with several authors, the magazine published on the occasion of Berthold Finkelstein's 100th birthday will also be presented and discussed.

The magazine was created in collaboration between the Hans and Berthold Finkelstein Foundation and the Gustav Stresemann Institute e.V. and honours the life's work of a man who had a decisive influence on political education in Germany.
"The magazine not only honours Berthold Finkelstein's life's work, but also tells the stories of the people who are carrying on his ideas today and are committed to political education, dialogue and democracy. Finkelstein created spaces where commitment, courage and critical thinking come together – we want to continue to fill these spaces with life so that his dream lives on, today and in the future. This shared goal strengthens the close connection between our foundation and the Gustav Stresemann Institute," emphasises Annemarie Hühne-Ramm, Managing Director of the Finkelstein Foundation.
Here is the magazine (german) as an e-paper.
Author and editor Esther Sambale has described a wide variety of courageous, supportive and inspiring political education projects for democracy and Europe in the magazine and spoken to committed individuals. She also met Johannes Finkelstein, who spoke about his father's visions and life story. In an interview with Erik Bettermann, former president of the GSI and long-time friend of Berthold Finkelstein, readers gain a deeper insight into his professional work. Well-known author Natascha Strobl provides an outlook and calls for solidarity and cohesion.
