Ilan Fiorentino Cup: International Friendship Tournament Sends Strong Message Against Antisemitism

On June 7, the 2nd Ilan Fiorentino Cup took place in Düsseldorf—an international friendship and soccer tournament organized by the Jewish Community of Düsseldorf. Bayer supported the Cup with substantive backing from the Finkelstein Foundation, standing as a visible signal against antisemitism and all forms of group-based hostility.

The event centered on more than just sport: the Cup brings together people from diverse cultural, religious, and national backgrounds, thereby strengthening intercultural dialogue, German-Israeli relations, and social cohesion. At the same time, the tournament honors Ilan Fiorentino—a teammate of the Fiore Veterans team from Sha'ar HaNegev who was killed on October 7, 2023, at Kibbutz Nahal Oz while saving a child's life.

The unique concept of the tournament was also reflected in the composition of the teams: The participants included last year’s champions, the “Sha’ar HaNegev ‘Fior’ Football Veteran Team” from Fiorentino’s home kibbutz in Nahal Oz, Israel; an Israeli student team from Sapir College in Sderot; “FC Landtag,” consisting of members and staff of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia; and a group of Iranian democracy activists.

Guy Doron: "The Ilan Fiorentino Cup brings people of different backgrounds together through sport. The fact that we can support this format is, for me personally and for our company, an important signal against all forms of hostility toward people."

Beyond the matches, the day was shaped by a side program as well as contributions from the Jewish Community of Düsseldorf and political leaders, including Mona Neubaur, Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Düsseldorf's Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller, who served as patrons of the event.
