Funding Guidelines

Support provided by the Finkelstein Foundation

The Hans und Berthold Finkelstein Stiftung gGmbH finances projects that pursue two complementary goals.

On the one hand, it supports projects relating to the culture of remembrance and the scientific reassessment of the injustices committed during the period of National Socialist crimes. The focus here is on I.G. Farben and the use of forced labor.

With a view to the future, the Finkelstein Foundation gGmbH also promotes the examination and shaping of democratic action, especially among young leaders, and the shaping of a culture of remembrance.

The Hans and Berthold Finkelstein Foundation supports projects that fall into at least one of the three areas of remembrance, research and resilience.

What we support:

  • Research projects to expand and spread knowledge about Nazi forced labour and I.G. Farben.
  • Initiatives for a contemporary remembrance that particularly make visible Nazi forced labour, deal with the economy in Nazi Germany and reach people in companies or young people.
  • Programmes for young leaders and other employees on the topics of historical responsibility and democratic action.
  • Projects that strengthen resilience against anti-Semitism, racism, all forms of hatred and (digital) violence and promote democratic dialogue.

Who can apply for funding:

The Hans and Berthold Finkelstein Foundation supports organizations, associations and companies that are recognized as non-profit organizations under public law.

What we do not support:

Please bear the following in mind:

  • In the interest of transparency and outreach, we do not sponsor one-time initiatives or events.
  • We do not give donations
  • We do not sponsor outside the areas of remembrance, research and resilience.

How we decide on funding proposals

  • If your project fits our criteria, send us an email with a project overview (2 pages maximum) and estimated costs at finkelstein.stiftung@bayer.com
  • We will check if it fits with the criteria, and whether we still have financial possibilities. If needed, we will address a member of our Advisory council and give you feedback.
  • If the response is positive, we will discuss the content of the projects in detail in a meeting and let you know about the maximum financial support we can provide.
  • You need to send us a project outline taking into account all the comments, as this will form the basis for a grant agreement.

If we don’t have any remaining budget for a particular year, we will let you know about it here. Funds for 2025 are partially already allocated. Decisions on current requests will be made in May 2025. The funds can then be used at the earliest in the second half of 2025.
